Mind Lab Pro Reviews: Releases Comprehensive Evidence Review on Nootropic Formula and Human Research

The review focuses on what has actually been investigated in published human research rather than assuming that findings involving an individual nutrient, botanical extract or amino acid automatically establish the effects of a multi-ingredient dietary supplement.

According to the current U.S. Supplement Facts panel, a two-capsule serving of Mind Lab Pro contains vitamin B6 at 2.5 mg, vitamin B9 at 100 mcg, vitamin B12 at 7.5 mcg, Cognizin-branded citicoline at 250 mg, Bacopa monnieri extract at 150 mg, organic Lion’s Mane mushroom at 500 mg, sunflower-derived phosphatidylserine at 100 mg, N-acetyl-L-tyrosine at 175 mg, L-theanine at 100 mg, Rhodiola rosea root extract at 50 mg and maritime pine bark extract at 75 mg. The company also describes the formula as caffeine-free and states that ingredient amounts are disclosed rather than combined into a proprietary blend.

Research involving nootropic ingredients varies considerably in study population, duration, extract standardization and dosage. For that reason, research on an ingredient should not be interpreted as evidence that every formulation containing that ingredient will reproduce the same outcome.

Citicoline: Human Research Includes Attention and Memory Studies

Citicoline, also known as CDP-choline, is a naturally occurring compound involved in phospholipid metabolism. Mind Lab Pro currently supplies 250 mg per two-capsule serving in the branded Cognizin form.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in The Journal of Nutrition studied Cognizin citicoline in 100 adults between 50 and 85 years old who had age-associated memory impairment. Participants received either placebo or 500 mg of citicoline daily for 12 weeks. Researchers reported statistically significant improvements over placebo in certain secondary measures, including episodic memory and a composite memory score. The study was sponsored by the manufacturer of Cognizin, an important consideration when interpreting the results.

The same paper discussed earlier research involving 250 mg of Cognizin daily in middle-aged women, where attention-related outcomes had been studied. However, the broader evidence remains more nuanced than a single positive trial suggests. In 2024, the European Food Safety Authority reviewed evidence concerning a citicoline memory health claim and concluded that a cause-and-effect relationship had not been established for improving or maintaining memory in the population it evaluated.

Accordingly, citicoline research provides a scientific basis for continued investigation, but it should not be represented as proof that 250 mg in a multi-ingredient product will improve memory in every user.

Bacopa Monnieri: A Botanical With a Substantial Cognitive Research History

Bacopa monnieri has been evaluated in multiple randomized trials, particularly in relation to memory, attention and information processing. Mind Lab Pro uses 150 mg of a full-spectrum Bacopa extract standardized to 24% bacosides.

A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology examined randomized, placebo-controlled human trials in which standardized Bacopa extracts were administered for at least 12 weeks. Nine studies involving 518 participants met the researchers’ inclusion criteria. The analysis identified effects on certain cognitive measures, including choice reaction time and the Trail Making Test B, but the authors also emphasized the need for larger, well-designed trials.

A newer 2026 network meta-analysis involving 29 randomized trials and more than 2,100 participants also reported dose-related differences in outcomes for Bacopa preparations. The doses and extracts evaluated across those trials were not identical to the 150 mg extract used in Mind Lab Pro.

This distinction matters because botanical research cannot be compared solely by the milligram number on a label. Extract ratios, bacoside concentrations, duration and study population can materially affect results.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom: Emerging Human Evidence, With Important Dose Differences

Lion’s Mane, or Hericium erinaceus, has attracted research interest because of naturally occurring compounds found in the mushroom. Mind Lab Pro’s U.S. formula currently lists 500 mg of organic Lion’s Mane mushroom.

Human evidence remains developing. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving older Japanese adults with mild cognitive impairment used substantially larger daily quantities of Lion’s Mane material for 16 weeks and reported differences in cognitive scores compared with placebo during treatment. The population and dose in that study are not directly comparable with healthy adults taking a 500 mg supplement.

More recently, researchers conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study in 18 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 using an acute 3-gram dose of a Lion’s Mane fruiting-body extract. The study investigated executive function, working memory, attention, processing speed and mood. The small sample size and much larger experimental dose mean the findings should not be directly transferred to the Mind Lab Pro serving.

Lion’s Mane therefore represents an ingredient with active human research rather than an ingredient for which a universal cognitive effect can presently be assumed.

Phosphatidylserine: Evidence Is Mixed and Formulation Dependent

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid found in cell membranes. Mind Lab Pro currently provides 100 mg of sunflower-derived phosphatidylserine per serving.

Research involving phosphatidylserine illustrates why selective citation can be misleading. Earlier clinical trials have produced both positive and negative results.

For example, a large older trial involving elderly patients with cognitive decline reported differences favoring 300 mg of phosphatidylserine daily on certain cognitive and behavioral measures. By contrast, another controlled trial involving 120 older adults with memory complaints tested 300 mg and 600 mg of soy-derived phosphatidylserine and found no significant advantage over placebo across its cognitive outcomes.

Other studies have evaluated phosphatidylserine combined with omega-3 fatty acids, coffee cherry extract or additional nutrients. Such combination trials cannot establish the independent effect of phosphatidylserine itself.

For this reason, it would be inappropriate to describe phosphatidylserine as universally proven to enhance memory, particularly when the doses, source material and study populations differ from the current Mind Lab Pro formula.

L-Theanine: Controlled Research Has Examined Attention and Reaction Time

Mind Lab Pro provides 100 mg of L-theanine, an amino acid naturally associated with tea.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involving 32 healthy young adults compared 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg doses of L-theanine with placebo. Researchers reported that 100 mg and 200 mg improved simple reaction time after adjustment for placebo-related changes, while benefits were not demonstrated across all of the more complex attention measures.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 31 randomized trials involving 1,168 participants. The authors reported effects in some stress and cognitive outcomes while also noting that the clinical relevance of L-theanine remains an area requiring careful interpretation.

These findings make L-theanine one of the Mind Lab Pro ingredients for which controlled human research includes doses overlapping the amount found in the formula. Even so, results from isolated L-theanine cannot establish the magnitude of any effect when it is consumed as one component of a broader supplement.

Rhodiola Rosea: Research Has Focused Primarily on Stress and Fatigue Conditions

Mind Lab Pro supplies 50 mg of Rhodiola rosea root extract standardized to 3% rosavins and 1% salidrosides.

Controlled human studies of Rhodiola have frequently focused on mental performance during stressful or fatiguing circumstances rather than enhancement under ordinary conditions.

One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 161 military cadets examined standardized Rhodiola extract against a background of fatigue and stress. Another double-blind crossover study investigated healthy physicians during night duty and reported differences in a combined mental-fatigue performance measure during part of the intervention period.

However, those studies used standardized preparations and dosing protocols different from the 50 mg included in Mind Lab Pro. More recent work has also found small or trivial effects for some measures, reinforcing the need to avoid describing Rhodiola as a guaranteed cognitive enhancer.

N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine: Related Tyrosine Research Requires Extra Caution

Mind Lab Pro contains 175 mg of N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, or NALT. L-tyrosine has been investigated because it is a dietary amino acid involved in the synthesis of catecholamines. Reviews of human trials suggest that supplemental L-tyrosine may sometimes reduce performance declines during demanding or stressful conditions, although researchers have characterized the overall evidence as insufficient for strong conclusions.

Importantly, most cognition studies have investigated L-tyrosine rather than N-acetyl-L-tyrosine. Human pharmacokinetic research on NALT has raised questions about how efficiently it acts as a tyrosine precursor under certain conditions. Consequently, findings involving multi-gram doses of ordinary L-tyrosine should not be used to claim that 175 mg of NALT produces the same cognitive effects.

This is one of the clearest examples of why “research-backed ingredient” and “clinically established product effect” are not interchangeable terms.

Maritime Pine Bark Extract: Research Exists, but Extract Identity Matters

The formula also contains 75 mg of maritime pine bark extract standardized to 95% proanthocyanidins.

A substantial portion of published human research on French maritime pine bark involves Pycnogenol, a specific patented Pinus pinaster extract. A 2024 review identified 39 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials involving more than 2,000 participants across several areas of health, including some cognition-related research.

Studies have also examined 100 mg daily of Pycnogenol in older adults on measures related to cognitive function and oxidative stress.

However, evidence involving one patented pine bark extract cannot automatically be assigned to another extract simply because both originate from maritime pine. Standardization, sourcing and manufacturing can differ. The Mind Lab Pro label identifies its extract as containing 95% proanthocyanidins; claims about the finished formula should therefore remain tied to evidence specifically applicable to that formulation rather than to unrelated branded extracts.

Vitamins B6, B9 and B12: Established Nutritional Roles, Not Standalone Proof of Cognitive Enhancement

Mind Lab Pro also includes vitamins B6, B9 and B12.

Vitamin B6 participates in more than 100 enzyme reactions and has established roles in metabolism. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements notes that vitamin B6 participates in neurotransmitter biosynthesis and normal cognitive development. However, the same NIH resource states that supplementation has not generally been shown to improve cognitive function in otherwise healthy people.

Folate, or vitamin B9, is required for DNA synthesis, cell division and one-carbon metabolism. Although folate and other B vitamins can influence homocysteine levels, reviews of supplementation trials have generally not demonstrated broad cognitive enhancement in adequately nourished populations.

Vitamin B12 contributes to normal blood and nerve-cell function and DNA synthesis. Deficiency can have neurological consequences, but that does not mean additional B12 improves cognition in people who already have adequate nutritional status. NIH reviews similarly report that randomized trials have generally not found cognitive improvement from B12 supplementation, alone or with other B vitamins, in populations without a specific correctable deficiency.

Research on the Finished Mind Lab Pro Formula

Ingredient research is only one part of the evidence picture. Mind Lab Pro itself has also been studied as a completed multi-ingredient formulation.

A 2023 study published in Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental evaluated 49 healthy adults aged 20 to 68 in a pseudo-randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Thirty-six participants received Mind Lab Pro and 13 received placebo for 30 days. Researchers assessed auditory memory, visual memory, visual working memory, immediate recall and delayed recall and reported improvements across multiple measures in the supplement group. The relatively small and uneven study groups, pseudo-randomization and company funding are relevant limitations when interpreting those findings.

A separate 2023 study involving 105 healthy adults used a pseudo-randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design to investigate simple reaction time, choice reaction time and anticipation after 30 days. The researchers reported statistically significant changes on the measured tasks in the Mind Lab Pro group. The study also acknowledged baseline and study-design considerations that limit how broadly its findings should be generalized.

The company reports additional research involving EEG measurements, but individual studies vary in methodology and endpoints. No single trial establishes that the supplement will produce a particular cognitive outcome for every person.
