WESTMINSTER, VT, UNITED STATES, August 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Championing Student Development Through Communication, Community, and Compassionate Leadership
Ellen A. Wood is an accomplished education and residential services leader whose career has been defined by communication, community building, student development, and a commitment to helping young people thrive. As Director of Residential Services at Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children in Westminster, Vermont, she leads K–8 residential life programming and weekend activities designed to provide students with structure, support, and opportunities for meaningful personal growth.
Since assuming the role in 2020, Ellen has overseen the day-to-day residential experience, along with her director level colleagues, working to ensure that students are supported in a safe, engaging, and growth-oriented environment. Her responsibilities span behavioral support, daily routines, staff coordination, community building, celebrations, and milestone events, including graduations. The position requires her to remain responsive to changing student needs and the constantly evolving rhythm of the school year.
For Ellen, effective residential programming begins with understanding that students need both structure and connection. Her leadership approach emphasizes creating cohesive teams of staff members who can work together toward common goals while building an environment where students feel supported and understood.
A Career Built Around Education and Student Engagement
Ellen’s career in education began in 1992 when she joined Landmark College shortly after completing her undergraduate studies. Over nearly 28 years at the institution, she held a variety of positions, including Resident Dean, Associate Professor in the Communications Department, and athletic coach.
Her work at Landmark allowed her to operate across multiple areas of student life, combining academics, residential programming, athletics, and student engagement. Much of her work involved supporting neurodiverse learners and helping students develop practical skills that extended beyond the classroom.
Ellen also developed innovative programming that connected athletics with social learning. Through hands-on experiences, students were able to strengthen communication, relationship-building, and life skills in practical environments.
Her extensive experience with young adults eventually prompted her to consider where she could make an even earlier impact. Ellen observed that some students were arriving at college without foundational life skills and began thinking about the importance of intervention earlier in their educational journeys.
That realization ultimately led her back to the K–8 environment. In 2020, she transitioned into her current position at Kurn Hattin Home and School for Children, where she could contribute to student development during a formative stage of life.
Communication as the Foundation of Leadership
Ellen attributes much of her success to her background in communication. She believes effective communication transcends virtually every professional environment because it determines how people talk with one another, collaborate, solve problems, and build relationships.
As a leader, she considers communication one of the most important skills she can give her staff. Her goal is to build teams and communities in which everyone understands their role and works together toward the organization’s larger objectives.
Whether she is working with students, colleagues, or staff members, Ellen strives to remain both professional and personable. She wants the people around her to see her as a resource—someone they can approach when they need guidance, support, or simply someone willing to listen.
For Ellen, successful leadership is not simply about directing people. It is about building meaningful relationships and creating an environment in which individuals can work together effectively.
Learning From a Mentor
One of the most influential figures in Ellen’s career was Donna Wheeler, who led short-term programs at the college Ellen attended while she was still a student.
Ellen credits Wheeler with teaching her how to be effective and efficient while also demonstrating how a supervisor can be kind, caring, and supportive without compromising expectations.
That balance between compassion and accountability became an important part of Ellen’s own leadership philosophy. She learned that maintaining high standards does not require sacrificing empathy, and that strong leaders can hold people accountable while still creating an environment where employees feel valued.
The lessons she gained from that early mentor have continued to influence her approach throughout her career.
Encouraging Women to Build Versatile Careers
For young women entering education and related professional fields, Ellen recommends diversifying their experiences.
She believes that building a broad professional background creates flexibility and allows individuals to pivot when new opportunities emerge. Her own career serves as an example of this philosophy.
Before moving into her current leadership role, Ellen worked as a professor, coach, and residential professional. Those experiences gave her a broad understanding of education and student development. Later, earning her master’s degree opened additional opportunities and allowed her to move in a direction that aligned with her evolving professional goals.
For Ellen, having varied experiences creates options. A diverse résumé can provide professionals with the ability to respond when circumstances change rather than feeling locked into a single career path.
Concern for the Future of Higher Education
One of Ellen’s greatest concerns is the broader state of higher education and what the changing landscape could mean for students seeking specialized educational experiences.
She has watched smaller colleges close, including institutions in Massachusetts and the surrounding region, and worries that students may increasingly have fewer opportunities to attend smaller or specialty-focused schools.
For students with unique career goals or specific educational needs, those institutions can provide options that larger universities may not always offer. Ellen believes preserving educational diversity is important because students do not all learn, grow, or pursue their futures in the same way.
Her concern reflects the same student-centered philosophy that has guided her career: educational systems should create meaningful choices and opportunities for individuals to find the environment where they can succeed.
Leading With Connection and Purpose
At the heart of Ellen’s professional and personal values are effective teams, meaningful relationships, communication, compassion, and high standards. She believes leaders must be able to support people while also challenging them to perform at their best.
Her commitment to mentoring also remains an important part of her work. After decades in education and student services, she finds fulfillment in helping the next generation of professionals develop their skills and navigate their careers.
Outside of work, Ellen values staying active and spending time outdoors. Golf, workouts at her local gym, gardening, and spending time with her dogs provide opportunities to remain active and connected to the world around her.
She also continues to bring the same principles of communication, service, and mentorship into her community involvement.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Ellen A. Wood continues to demonstrate that meaningful leadership begins with people. By communicating clearly, building strong teams, maintaining high expectations, and remaining genuinely approachable, she creates environments where both students and professionals can grow. Her work reflects a lasting commitment to education and the belief that when people are given the right support, relationships, and opportunities, they can discover their strengths and build successful futures.
