From Russian Conservatory Traditions to Utah Innovation: Salt Lake City Music School Redefines Music Education
Salt Lake City, UT (PRUnderground) August 10th, 2026
The Diana & Joel Peterson School of Music, founded by renowned musicians Eugene and Vera Watanabe, is transforming the landscape of music education in the United States. Since opening in 2008, the nonprofit has provided rigorous pre-conservatory training while demonstrating how access to high-quality music education develops not only exceptional musicians, but also individuals who embody the values of collaboration, dedication, accessibility and excellence.
Inspired by the comprehensive, state-supported music conservatories of her youth in Russia, Vera recognized a critical gap in the American education system: the lack of intensive, long-term music training available to children regardless of their financial circumstances.
“When children develop the discipline to master an instrument, it transforms their outlook, builds resilience, and unlocks a deep capacity for empathy,” she said.
Through its GRIT Scholarship Program, the Peterson School of Music provides free instruments, ensemble training, Suzuki group classes, and private instruction to students in Title I schools and vibrant immigrant communities across the Salt Lake valley. The program offers underrepresented youth unprecedented opportunities, including performing on world-class stages like Salt Lake City’s Abravanel Hall.
Additionally, The Academy program gives students specialized individual classes and pre-professional training, while The Conservatory prepares them for admission into the nation’s top music schools. The school’s commitment to accessibility and uncompromising excellence has yielded extraordinary results, with graduates of the school’s conservatory seeing a 100% college acceptance rate, earning admission to top-tier universities, including Stanford, Yale, and all local universities, including Brigham Young University, University of Utah, Weber, and Utah State University. Alumni also regularly secure spots in highly-renowned conservatories, such as Juilliard, Curtis Institute of Music, Colburn School, Cleveland, Rice, Michigan, San Francisco Conservatory, Cincinnati, and the Royal College in London. Many alumni who complete music degrees have gone on to solo careers, major orchestra positions and/or return to the school to teach the next generation of students.
Beyond musical success, research also consistently shows that students engaged in structured music programs achieve higher academic marks, demonstrate stronger problem-solving skills in high-stress environments, and graduate to become high-contributing members of the workforce.
“Our primary purpose is to raise good citizens,” said Eugene. “Every dollar invested in music education returns tenfold to our community. When kids learn accountability with a private teacher and collaborate in an orchestra, they develop life skills that stay with them forever. As Salt Lake City grows and diversifies, investing in these young people, especially those who need the opportunity most, ensures a brighter future for our entire city.”
Going forward, the Diana & Joel Peterson School of Music aims to expand its infrastructure to offer more students opportunities for world-class music education.
