WINNIPEG, MB: Ashley Newton, a licensed funeral director and the owner of Alterna Cremation, has made it her mission to change the way that people think about funeral services by providing them with affordable direct cremation. Today, she and the team at Alterna Cremation are proud to announce that their crematorium is now operational – the first crematorium in Canada to be built by a woman.
By owning and operating their own crematorium, the team at Alterna Cremation have full control over the process of cremation. This allows the team to provide a more personal and accountable approach to cremation. The funeral directors, Ashley and Jayde, perform all decedent care, so loved ones are cared for by the women at Alterna at all times.
“From the moment your loved one is brought to us until their ashes are returned to you, they are in our care,” said Newton. “Owning and operating our own crematorium means we can offer complete transparency over every step of the process, and allows us to ensure that the customs and rites that are most important to you, your loved one, and your family are followed.”
Alterna Cremation is the only direct cremation provider in Winnipeg that owns its own crematorium. Direct cremation means that the team at Alterna Cremation only offers cremations, not burials or memorial services.
In addition to building and operating their own crematorium, the team at Alterna Cremation is also opening a second public-facing location in St. Norbert this fall. The new location will be located at 3455 Pembina Highway.
“Our goal is to make funeral services more accessible. We’ve done that by making direct cremation more affordable, and in opening a new location, we aim to make it easier for people to connect with us and learn more about our services,” said Newton.
A woman-owned and operated business, Alterna Cremation has provided Manitobans with direct cremation services since 2019. What began as a one-woman mission has evolved into a team of three compassionate women who serve 350 families that have experienced a loss each year.
