Lousiville, KY – October 7, 2026 – A poignant new biography, “Fifty Years in the Trenches: Margie Montgomery and the Fight for Life,” chronicles the extraordinary life and legacy of a woman who spent half a century spearheading the pro-life movement in Kentucky. Meticulously crafted by her son, journalist and educator Schu Montgomery, the book offers an intimate look at a lifetime of unwavering conviction that shaped decades of advocacy for the unborn.
Margie Montgomery’s story is one of steadfast dedication, deep faith, and unmatched tenacity in the face of opposition. From humble beginnings as a student with “literary aspirations,” as noted in her yearbook, to becoming a prominent public figure unafraid to confront Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun—author of Roe v. Wade—her life reflects a profound commitment to protecting the voiceless. Her leadership was not only instrumental in restoring the Right to Life movement’s momentum in Kentucky, but also served as a catalyst for grassroots advocacy across the United States.
The biography is the culmination of years of research, including a treasure trove of Margie’s newsletters, personal correspondence, journals, and more, unearthed from her self-described “archives.” Through these detailed records, Schu Montgomery weaves an inspiring narrative of Margie’s remarkable life, blending her personal sacrifices and professional milestones with historical context and heartfelt anecdotes. This deeply human portrait showcases how Margie balanced her roles as a devoted mother and a tireless activist, embodying grace, dignity, and a fierce allegiance to her cause.
“At its core, this book captures what made my mom ‘tick,’” shared Montgomery. “Despite immense challenges, she spent 50 uninterrupted years leading a movement with unwavering determination, never letting up or giving up. Her spirit of faith, kindness, and resolve carried her through, and I’m honored to tell her story.”
Throughout the book, readers will walk alongside Margie Montgomery as she builds coalitions, navigates hardships, and celebrates victories in her mission to fight for life in the Bluegrass State. With testimonials and insights from colleagues and supporters alike, the book honors the efforts of countless pro-life advocates united by a shared vision of hope and justice.

From the Back Cover:
Margaret “Margie” Montgomery never set out to make history. She was a southern wife and mother, comfortable in her Louisville life, involved in her church, raising three children. Then 1973 changed everything. When Roe v. Wade passed, Margie didn’t look away. She looked closer. And what she saw convinced her that someone had to do something. So she did.
Over the next five decades, she became the founder and face of Kentucky Right to Life, a tireless advocate for the unborn who lobbied Frankfort, advised senators, briefed national leaders, and built a movement from her kitchen table outward. She did it with grace, without raising her voice, and without ever putting her name above the cause.
This is her story, told by the son who watched her do it all.
Written by Schu Montgomery, “Fifty Years in the Trenches” is a biography that is part tribute, part history, and entirely personal. It traces Margie from her warm New Jersey childhood through her college years, her love story with her husband, her decades of activism, and finally her last days, when the woman who had fought for the lives of strangers spent her final weeks being cared for by the son she shaped into the man he became. Margie Montgomery passed away on July 4, 2023. Independence Day. The timing felt right.
